Ingredient
of the Month (again): Milk Thistle Seed
(Silybum
Marianus) and Non-melanoma Skin
Cancer
Since we are
still in the season for high UV exposure, we thought you would
be interested in some information on Milk Thistle Seed and
non-melanoma skin cancer. Our May, 2004 newsletter highlights the
protective and restorative effects of the Milk Thistle Seed on
the liver. It
appears that these strong antioxidant (free radical
neutralizing) abilities may also have protective effects in
preventing skin cancer.
Several
clinical studies done in the 1990’s found a greatly reduced
incidence of non-melanoma skin cancers in mice that were given
silymarin (the active ingredient in milk thistle seed).
According
to a paper published in the National Cancer Institute, non-melanoma skin cancer (primarily caused by solar
ultraviolet (UV) radiation) is the most common cancer among
humans. The
Institute has found that Silymarin, a flavonoid compound
isolated from the milk thistle seed, can provide
substantial protection against different stages of
UVB-induced carcinogenesis. This effect of
silymarin is due to inhibition of several different events
associated with UVB-induced tumor initiation and tumor
promotion. In studies
assessing
the protection against UVB radiation-induced tumor initiation,
silymarin showed considerable reduction in tumor incidence,
tumor multiplicity, and tumor volume per mouse. Further clinical
testing of its usefulness in humans is warranted
according to the studies’ authors.
